Emerging technologies in oil and gas development: Regulatory and policy perspectives

Technology has always enabled oil and gas development. With the need for rapid decarbonisation to transition to a net zero energy system, the oil and gas sector is facing its greatest technological challenge yet. This chapter examines how oil and gas development faces dynamic regulatory challenges and opportunities in transitioning to low-carbon technology entities. It outlines the regulatory responses of several states in regulating existing, new, and emerging technologies in oil and gas development in onshore and Arctic offshore environments. Finally, it explores the important role of information technology, data management, and blockchain regulatory frameworks to enable efficient commercial energy transactions.
