Low frequency eigenmodes of the Earth's fluid core

<p>Earth's rotation period varies over many time scales ranging from diurnal to several milennia, in addition to its secular increase due to tidal friction. These variations in the rotation period imply an exchange of angular momentum between the mantle and other fluid layers of the Earth, such as the atmosphere, oceans, and the fluid outer core. In order to disentangle the role of the outer core, a good understanding of its low frequency eigenmodes is necessary. We attempt to build a relatively simple model of the Earth's fluid core including gravitational, viscous, and magnetic coupling with the mantle and the solid inner core. Our goal is to assess whether observed length-of-day variations can be partially attributed to outer core eigenmodes, and if that is the case, to explore the implications related to the outer core-mantle and outer-inner core coupling mechanisms.</p>
