Abstract
Migraine, a debilitating neurological disease, has an estimated prevalence of 15% in Europe. Here, we describe healthcare resource use (HRU), productivity and quality of life (QoL) in patients with migraine included in the OVERCOME (EU) study. The Observational survey of the Epidemiology, Treatment and Care Of Migraine Europe [OVERCOME (EU)], is a cross-sectional, population-based survey of adults conducted in Germany and Spain, as part of an overarching study program that also includes the US and Japan. Enrolment and data collection occurred between October 2020 and February 2021. Participants who reported having headache or migraine in the last 12-months AND identified as having migraine based on the modified ICHD-3 screening criteria OR self-reported physician diagnosis of migraine were included in the migraine cohort. Summary statistics were stratified by headache days (HD)/month. The OVERCOME (EU) migraine cohort (N=20,756) had a mean age of 40.4 and 60.3% were female. Most (66.3%) reported 0-3 HD/month, with 20.2%, 8.3%, and 5.1% reporting 4-7, 8-15 and 15+ HD/month, respectively. In those HD/month categories, ≥1 healthcare provider visit in the previous 12-months due to migraine or severe headache was reported by 64.0%, 76.0%, 82.3% and 84.6%, respectively. Overall, the most common healthcare providers visited were primary care/general practice (42.2%), pharmacist (23.9%), general neurologist (14.9%) and emergency service/urgent care (10.3%). Among those taking acute medication (92.5%), the mean number of current acute medications use increased across the HD/month categories: 4.6, 5.3, 5.6 and 5.6, respectively. In those HD/month categories, presenteeism (previous 7 days) was 39.5%, 46.5%, 51.6% and 51.9%, mean EuroQoL (EQ)-5D 5L was 0.84, 0.82, 0.78 and 0.71, and those in the MIDAS grade IV category indicating severe disability were 11.9%, 33.2%, 50.7% and 64.1%, respectively. Generally, HRU, acute medication use and disability increased, and productivity and QoL scores decreased, with increasing HD/month.
