The stock-service productivity of the European road transport infrastructure

•From 2010 to 2019, the productivity of the materials stocked in European roads increased slightly.•Western European countries had high economic activity paired with modest stock-service productivity.•Central-Eastern European have high stock productivity rates but low economic benefits.•Freight transport intensity and affluence were the dominant driving factors of stock-service productivity changes in both regional and national scales.
