Abstract
Shorter rise times, faster switching frequencies, and higher DC link voltages are all features of high dV/dt power converters that promote power density and loss reduction [1] - [4] . A higher dV/dt increases the risk of partial discharge (PD) between the turn-to-turn insulation, especially in the first turns of the machine winding, where a higher voltage can drop because of the reflections (the surge impedance of the machine is higher than that of the feeding cable which connects it to the converter) [5] . PD activity can cause electrical machines to go out of operation by prematurely failing the winding insulation, especially for Type I turn-to-turn insulations (i.e., organic insulating materials), reducing reliability [6] , [7] .
