•Nanostructured ZnO layers were obtained on FTO-coated glass by electrodeposition.•Electrodeposition was carried out at room temperature.•Electrodeposition conditions influenced materials morphology and composition.•Photoelectrochemical activity of ZnO films was studied.•The highest photocurrents were generated by the sample deposited at −1.5 V for 40 min.
