•Flame nanoparticle deposition is explored for fabrication of plasmonic SERS sensors.•This fast and reproducible process drastically lowers the manufacture costs.•The developed sensors exhibit comparable performance to commercial products.•Proof-of-concept detection of pesticides in fruit juice for food safety diagnostics.
