•New Bi-based composites were prepared using rice husk as C and SiO2 sources.•The type of support strongly affected the iodine adsorption and retention.•The Bi0-SiO2 composite showed the highest iodine retention.•The Bi0-C composite exhibited the highest iodine adsorption capacity.•Except for chemical reaction, charge transfer (C–I) also contributed to adsorption.
