Newly Synthesized Nanocomposites for Superior Barrier and Hydrophobic Behaviours of Tinplates for the Applications in Food Packaging Industry

Abstract
Nanocomposite coatings are designed to offer useful surface coatings that are relatively inexpensive and have exceptional properties for anticorrosion, antibacterial, and adhesive applications. The impact of poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) P(Aam-co-AAc)/SnO 2 structure on the protection capabilities of epoxy coating was investigated by Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), and Antibacterial activity studies. In comparison to pure epoxy coatings, EP-P(Aam-co-AAc)/SnO 2 nanocomposite on tinplate exhibits higher protection against coating degradation. The coating resistance ( R coat ) of the EP-P(Aam-co-AAc)/SnO 2 nanocomposite was determined to be 4854.70 kΩ.cm 2 . The R coat of EP-P(Aam-co-AAc)/SnO 2 nanocomposite coating was observed to be over 38 times greater than EP coating. SECM analysis displays less noticeable current distribution for the EP-P(Aam-co-AAc)/SnO 2 . The analyses of degradation products by XRD and SEM/EDX confirm the influence of functionalized SnO 2 particles in protecting ability of epoxy coating. The EP-P(Aam-co-AAc)/SnO 2 nanocomposite coating's hydrophobic property (θ = 145°) was validated. The proposed nanocomposite coatings have improved mechanical characteristics. The findings demonstrate that the antibacterial activity of the EP-P(Aam-co-AAc)/SnO 2 nanocomposite in wells was higher than that of pure EP. The addition of P(Aam-co-AAc)/SnO 2 nanoparticles to the epoxy matrix prevented material degradation and helped to extend the life of the coated tinplates. The newly synthesised EP-P(Aam-co-AAc)/SnO 2 nanocomposite provided an outstanding barrier and mechanical properties. Therefore, EP-P(Aam-co-AAc)/SnO 2 nanocomposite could be used as the potential coating material in food packaging industry.
