Familial breast and ovarian cancer-Prevention or early diagnosis?

Aim of the work/question Increasing life expectancy and unhealthy lifestyle factors are leading to a steady increase in cancer incidence. Effective cancer prevention strategies can reduce cancer incidence and mortality.Material and methods Using the example of the care concept for women with a familial burden of breast and ovarian cancer, this paper addresses challenges and initiatives in the field of cancer prevention.Results and discussion In the centers of the German Consortium of Familial Breast and Ovarian Cancer and the network of certified breast and gynecological cancer centers cooperating with them, modern genetic diagnostics and individualized risk calculation are offered. Based on this, individualized risk-adjusted preventive measures are offered. In order to enable informed and preference-sensitive decisions, the initiatives range from the production of information brochures and decision-making aids to decision coaching and a curriculum for doctors for uniform high-quality care.
