Mapping rabies distribution in China: a geospatial analysis of national surveillance data

•In China, the risk of rabies had been largely reduced to a persistently low level.•The constant high-risk provinces for rabies were Guizhou, Guangxi, Hunan, and Hainan.•The re-emerging high-risk provinces were Yunnan and Anhui.•Priority animal vaccination are needed in those identified high-risk provinces.
