•Finite element model updating problem is converted into a surrogate model optimization problem.•Model parameter inverse identification is realized through sampling technology.•Multi-prediction value infill criterion is presented to improve the prediction accuracy of the surrogate model.•Trust region method is introduced to guide the surrogate model finding the global optimal solution.•Two case studies demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method.•Kriging surrogate model is adopted to improve the fitting accuracy of the training data.
