•Alkaline earth metal additives improve the Pt-dispersion and promote the Pt0 formation.•Alkaline earth metals weaken the poisoning effect of CO and enhance promoting effect of HCs.•Alkalinity and electron-donating ability favor the NO adsorption and activation.•NO reduction activity is improved as the electronegativity of M decreased.
