Abstract
An important aspect in the HVDC transmission lines is the ion flow field at the ground level. The ion flow field of ±500 kV HVDC double circuits with the dedicated metallic return conductors is presented in this paper. We aim to clarify the effect of transverse wind direction on the electric field on the ground and the ion current density. The transmission lines are simulated by using the upwind finite volume method (FVM). The influence of wind direction from positive to negative conductors yields higher current density and electric field peaks than that in the opposite direction. The ground-level electric field is similar for both wind directions. The peak positions of current density on the ground are close to the center line under the wind from the positive to the negative conductors. The opposite wind has the current peak near the right of way. Compared with the typical HVAC line, the HVDC lines have lower electric field at the peak position but higher field at the edge of right of way.
