Abstract
•The root cause for the retarded kinetics of the VFB anode is firstly analyzed from the EDL perspective.•VN with strong adsorption is proposed to improve the electrochemical reaction rate of the anode.•The VFB assembled with the VN-CF anode displays a high EE of 72.17% at 200 mA cm−2.
