Rationale: Muscle mass evaluation from BIA is an unreliable method to quantify muscle mass in ICU patients because of frequent fluid inflation. Taking as reference the muscle mass measured on third lumbar vertebra (L3)-targeted computed tomography (CT), our aims were to develop a BIA-derived equation to quantify muscle mass in ICU patients and to assess whether muscle mass is associated with 28-day mortality.
