•Proposing a fabrication method to enhance the detection capability of LPE HgCdTe avalanche focal plane array (FPA) for SWIR signals.•Tuning the composition gradient of HgCdTe material achieves different composition (band gap) in the absorption and multiplication regions.•Realized improvements in responsivity and detectivity (signal-to-noise ratio).
