•Anchored metal trimer clusters endow Mo2TiC2O2 MXene with high catalytic activity for N2 reduction.•Bidirectional electron transfer leads to sufficient activation of NN triple bond.•Valence electrons and charge transfer act as good descriptors to correlate the NRR activity for these M3/VO-Mo2TiC2O2 catalysts.
