•Chlorfenapyr has an adverse behavior effect and relatively delayed toxic activity on S. invicta workers.•The bait of chlorfenapyr exhibited significant efficacy against fire ants.•Chlorfenapyr was proved to be a potentially toxic compound for bait to manage S. invicta.
