•Alkali metal in MnOx-M2WO4/SiO2 affects activity under anaerobic conditions.•Lattice oxygen of MnOx-M2WO4/SiO2 can convert CH4 to hydrocarbons.•OCM over MnOx-M2WO4/SiO2 and M2WO4/SiO2 proceeds via adsorbed oxygen species.•Presence of MnOx does not create more active sites but changes their reactivity.
