Mitigation of nutrient leaching from bioretention systems using amendments

•Selected amendments do not significantly affect the water retention of bioretention systems.•Selected amendments are effective to mitigate P leaching from bioretention systems, but in different degrees.•Some amendments can reduce N leaching slightly, but some can even introduce N leached.•Using amendments alters the temporal evolution of P leaching, but not N leaching.
