•Connections between meteorological and hydrological droughts (CMHDs) were assessed.•HD exhibited steeper downward trend, smaller number, and longer duration compared with MD.•Human activities weakened multiple aspects of CMHDs in the Yellow River basin.•Weakening CMHDs featured smaller correlation, larger difference, and less propagation rate.
