•Extended exposure to an indulgent food scent paradoxically decreases indulgent food consumption rather than increasing healthy food consumption.•This may occur due to a counteractive diet goal activation brought about by the indulgent scent.•This occurs predominantly amongst individuals with restrained eating behaviors.
