•Bioaugmentation of Azoarcus sp. DD4 can effectively remove 1,4-dioxane.•Abundance of the tmoA gene in DD4 is correlated with 1,4-dioxane degradation rate.•Addition of two metabolizing cultures didn't accelerate 1,4-dioxane removal.•Thm and prm genes in metabolizing cultures showed potential for horizontal transfer.
