•Utilization of grape pomace, corn cob and Miscanthus × giganteus via HTC was explored.•Prepared Mg-doped pyro-hydrochars were examined as methylene blue adsorbents.•Sips isotherm model reveal high adsorption capacity of applied Mg-doped hydrochars.•Chemisorption and surface complexation are involved in MB binding using Mg-HCs.
