Abstract
•The photophysical properties of heterocyclic analogs of 1,4-cyclohexadiene were studied by theoretical calculation and experiment.•Their photophysical and photochemical properties were found to be related to the incorporation of different heteroatoms on the 1,4-cyclohexadiene ring.•The photophysical properties of heterocyclic analogs of 1,4-cyclohexadiene are meaningful for explaining their photochemical reactivity.
