Design of an Optimized Printed Log Periodic Dipole Antenna for Partial Discharge Monitoring

In this article, a modified, compact, broadband printed log periodic dipole antenna design is being proposed to detect the Partial Discharge generated due to insulation weakness in high voltage apparatus. The proposed antenna has an operating frequency band of 0.3 GHz – 3 GHz, which is very suitable for demanding purposes as per the IEC TS 62478. The proposed antenna is compact in size (1.1λ 0 × 0.8λ 0 × 0.005λ 0 ) by considering the center frequency at 1.65 GHz and gain up to 12 dBi. The antenna has good impedance matching, showing the return loss (S 11 ) below −10 dB for the overall bandwidth. The antenna offers a directional 3D radiation pattern which helps the antenna to place directionally towards the PD source.
