Design of a Smart Vest System to Protect and Rescue Fallen Elderly People

To detect the unexpected accidental fall and save the elderly in life-threatening scenarios, this research designs a fall alarm system based on MPU6050 and FIBOCOM ADP-L610-Arduino(L610) and controlled by STM32F407ZGT6. The MPU6050 sensor embedded in the abdomen of a wearable vest reports fall detection through offline audible and visual alarm with colored light, Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), and buzzer. The design automatically sends out calls and texts through FIBOCOM ADP-L610-Arduino, updating rescue information via smartphone app based on Alibaba Cloud Computing IOT platform. Elastic protection buffer is also provided by electromagnetic ejection upon falling. The test reveals the accuracy level of fall detection is over 98%, average response time of audible and visual alarm 20ms, smartphone app alarm arrives around 300ms, and calls and texts alarm respond within around 2. 2s. Overall the system achieve good results compared with the existing similar fall detection system.
