Effect of shielding gas on MIG welding performance with austenitic wire

•It is difficult to weld austenitic welding wire by MIG.•The grain boundary wetting phase transformations are explained.•The properties of deposited metal and welded joints are excellent.•A small amount of N2 in the shielding gas can improve the weld performance.•This technology can be used for automatic welding and has broad prospects.
