68. Ketamine as a Potential Intervention for Benzodiazepine Discontinuation in Treatment Resistant Depression

Benzodiazepines (BZDs) are among the most prescribed drugs in the world, and are associated with negative health consequences when prescribed for long periods. BZDs are difficult to discontinue due to withdrawal symptoms, including rebound insomnia and anxiety, increased depressive symptoms and, in some cases, increased suicidality. There is currently no evidence-based treatment to discontinue these medications in patients actively suffering from depressive symptoms. This study aimed to evaluate the potential therapeutic role of ketamine in the discontinuation of BZDs in patients with treatment-resistant-depression.
