Corrosion of pipeline steel in dense phase CO2 containing impurities: A critical review of test methodologies

Characterising the corrosion behaviour of pipeline steels in impurity-containing dense phase CO2 is essential for the cost-effective deployment of carbon capture and storage projects to combat climate change. A range of experimental studies has been undertaken using a variety of testing methods to predict and control corrosion in service. In this review, we summarise the principal factors that influence the corrosion of steel pipelines in these challenging environments and assess the effectiveness of common experimental methodologies. We highlight that the published literature on corrosion rates lacks reliability and reproducibility due to challenges in con-trolling test parameters, indicating the urgent need for the development of a standard test method.
