•Computational screening was conducted by orthorhombic phase forming ability.•ZrCo-based alloy with single orthorhombic phase has been synthesized.•100% capacity retention of ZrCo-based alloy is achieved after 200 cycles.•Isostructural phase transition unlocks an extraordinary cycling stability.
