Superhydrophobic Ca/Ce Coating on Anodized Magnesium Alloy by Electrodeposition and Its Corrosion Inhibition

A myristate coating containing Ca and Ce (Ca/Ce coating) was fabricated on the surface of an anodized magnesium alloy by a handy, rapid and facile electrodeposition method. The deposited coatings presented superhydrophobicity and excellent corrosion properties in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The effects of the concentration ratio of Ca 2+ and Ce 3+ in the electrolyte solution on the morphology, hydrophobicity and corrosion properties of the Ca/Ce coatings had been studied. The formation mechanism of the Ca/Ce coatings had been discussed in detail. The results indicated that the introduction of Ce ions in the electrolyte solution could enhance the coatings’ thickness and hydrophobicity compared with the single Ca coating. In order to provide durable and stable protection for magnesium alloy, an appropriate ratio of Ca 2+ and Ce 3+ is requisite for the Ca/Ce coating with rare cracks and high superhydrophobicity.
