•A newly developed 30Nb5Ta30Ti15V20Zr shows a superior fretting wear resistance.•The fretting regimes between 30Nb5Ta30Ti15V20Zr and Ti6Al4V are different.•A partial slip regime is a main fretting wear mechanism in 30Nb5Ta30Ti15V20Zr.•Low CoF and wear loss are resulted by a partial slip regime and self-lubricate oxide.
