•Cl-TCN@TC has great photocatalytic decarbonization and denitrification performance.•The e- on Ti3C2 is transferred to the VB of Cl-TCN under visible light irradiation.•A lot of •O2– is produced on the surface of Cl-TCN when TC and p-NP are degraded.•The e- on Cl-TCN@TC is transferred to the O atom of NO3– to break its N-O bond.
