•Decarbonization pathways in road passenger transport of BC are analyzed.•Electrification of light- and heavy-duty vehicles is explored via the MESSAGE model.•The effects of modal shift to public transport and active mobility are examined.•Scenarios and sensitivity analysis indicate how mitigation goals could be met.•An electrified fleet with public and active transport leads to a 95% CO2 mitigation.
