Abstract
•Nurses require skills and attitudes that are accepting of people living with mental illness regardless of their specialization area.•A desire for social distance was noted in this study, in addition to significantly high self-reported rates of depression.•Nursing programs should develop educational activities that target perceptions of dangerousness and importantly, universities should increase supports for students experiencing mental health issues.
