•A new highly efficient and selective phosphorylation of 8-aminoquinolins on the C5 position is reported.•In this work, Mn(OAc)2/Co(OAc)2 as the cocatalyst..•A series of C5 phosphonated amides were obtained in moderate yields with high regioselectivity.
