•The infiltration behaviour of bentonite slurry in sand was experimentally studied.•SEM tests unraveled the microstructure of filter cake from two perspectives.•The filter cake consists of dense layers of oriented bentonite platelets.•More fine sand in the slurry did not complete the formation of filter cake.
