Joint associations of environmental and sociodemographic attributes with active and sedentary travel

•Decision trees modeled interactions of multiple explanatory variables with travel durations.•Subgroups differing in active and sedentary travel durations were identified.•Attributes of people and places interacted in influencing travel durations.•Suburb-level population density was the most influential determinant of active travel.•Distance to the city center was the most influential determinant of sedentary travel.
