Preparation of cellulose acetate film with dual hydrophobic-hydrophilic properties using solution blow spinning

•Cellulose acetate membranes are prepared using solution blow spinning from solvent mixtures containing acetone and higher boiling point solvents.•The acetone ratio increase in a solvent mixture causes a transition from hydrophilic film to hydrophobic multi-structured membrane.•Sequential processing of two different polymer solutions allows the preparation of a double-layered film with distinctively different sides.•The sides of the film exhibit more than three times different roughness value and contact angle difference of 30°.•Hydrophobic material can be prepared from a hydrophilic polymer by inducing complex morphology with high roughness using solution blow spinning.
