Highly efficient simulation of composites by determining failure initiation and fracture angle with artificial neural networks

•Propose a highly efficient method for simulation by using LaRC05 failure criterion.•Artificial neural networks are adopted to predict the failure initiation and angle.•The proposed method is easy to be implemented in ABAQUS by subroutine.•The failure initiation ANN model can be used in conjunction with other algorithms.
