•The addition of amino acids increased the pH of the carbonated matrix.•CaCO3 polymorphs stabilized using amino acids did not change after moisture exposure.•Ca2+ leaching from the carbonated matrix was increased due to the amino acid addition.•Amino acids increased the mean elastic moduli and fracture energy of the composites.
