•A mineral-carbonation-based process is used for the synthesis of nanosized amorphous CaCO3.•The synthesis of alkanolamine-based DESs with improved CO2 delivery properties is reported.•DES-H2O systems act as inhibitors in the crystallization pathway.•Size- and morphology-controlled synthesis of CaCO3 nanoparticles is achieved via DES-H2O systems.
