•S-scheme Bi2S3/Bi/BiOBr heterojunction with oxygen vacancy and SPR was prepared.•Bi2S3/Bi/BiOBr exhibited superior photocatalytic activity for Cr(VI) removal.•The 3:10 Bi2S3/Bi/BiOBr exhibited high stability and good anti-interference ability.•Bi2S3/Bi/BiOBr can effectively treat Cr(VI)-containing electroplating wastewater.•Synergism of SPR, oxygen vacancy and internal electric field was provided.
