•The noncovalent interactions of DTT and r-GO facilitate fast-kinetics of organic electrode.•Zn//DTT@r-GO 1 battery exhibits considerable calendar life over 4000 cycles and high-rate performance.•Co-storage behaves of H+ and Zn2+ and favorable storage molecular configuration validated by the ex-situ analysis and DFT.•DTT@r-GO 1 electrode displays superior low temperature adaptability (−50 °C).
