•Pedotransfer function for recalculation of PSD from LDM into SPM was validated.•Pedotransfer function was validated on an independent database.•74% accuracy in converting LDM to SPM results was achieved.•Air dry soil samples are recommended for PSD measurements.•Ultrasound disaggregation is recommended for PSD measurements using LDM.
