•Fully condensed 2D carbon nitride (CN) has been successfully developed.•The 2D structure is evidenced by an acid dissolution experiment for the first time.•The formation of 2D framework provides convenient transfer paths.•2D CN based photocatalysts show significantly enhanced H2 production activity.
