Flow velocity evolution through a floating rigid cylinder array under unidirectional flow

•An analytical model was proposed to predict the velocity evolution through floating canopies of vegetation.•An estimator of the flow adjustment distance inside floating canopies was proposed and validated.•The predicted velocity evolution was in good agreement with measurements for a wide range of flow and vegetation conditions.
