•A soil-plant hydraulic model was developed by considering stomatal regulation and soil-root hydraulic resistance variations.•The decrease in soil-root hydraulic conductivity should be considered in soil-plant water transport modeling in severe drought conditions.•Stomatal sensitivity regulates the effects of soil-root hydraulic conductivity variations in soil-plant water transport modeling.
